Proto at Chop Suey. Why?

Monday April 9th 2012

Our main worship band Proto Evangelion (one of many bands) and I will be hosting a night praising God and exalting His name at Chop Suey on Capitol Hill.

As you may not know, Pastor Justin and I have joined Jesus' work in Capitol Hill, moving to 18th and Pike and starting a church that will inevitably be a light in a dark place. Capitol Hill is the most densely populated area in Seattle. It is the hub of Seattle's LGBT movement, bar scene, restaurant scene, coffee scene, music scene, and dying Christianity scene, as well as home to "Millionaire's Row." It is as much of a melting pot of ideas as America itself. But, like America, it needs Jesus.

This isn't your normal street-corner outreach in public in the city. The show costs $7, it's at a private venue, and it's 21+ because Chop Suey needs to make their alcohol sales quota for the night. While you might have a gut-reaction to this, thinking something like "How could you enter into a bar, isn't that supporting sin?" The answer Jesus gave for that question (Luke 15:2) was the story of the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin and the Prodigal Son. Our purpose at the show is to seek, and God will help us find. Also, the show will be a fundraiser for International Justice Mission, an awesome agency of lawyers that fights for freedom for sex-slaves across the world. Once again, our goal is to find, and show them the Gospel in action.

Next time you're at a worship service at Calvary, look around. What do you see: chairs, a stage, lights, a sound board, some instruments, people gathered, music... That is exactly what you see at Chop Suey. What is the difference? The god. We gather to worship God, the God of David, Moses, Luke, and Jesus. At a show, more often than not, the god is an idol: music, alcohol, sex, social networking. So we are going to redeem the venue, to God's glory, by worshiping Him in it. Chop Suey, as well as Capitol Hill, is a flagship of independent culture. Let's make it a flagship for the Gospel. Join us on February 8th.

I am looking forward to being there on Feb 8th to join my brothers and sisters in loving Jesus for the world to see. True Christianity is more often caught rather than taught because it is about relationship and not mere intellectual ascent. Two things cause this to happen .... First, when Jesus Christ is lifted up (John 12:32) and second, when believers love Jesus in a way that the community can see (Acts 2:43-44) My hope and prayer is that this act of worship in the community on Feb 8th will be a beacon of light and love calling people to give up their idols and embrace the one true and living God who is already reaching out to them through His son, Jesus Christ. (John 3:16-17)
