Birds sing outside my bedroom window—a sweet prelude to a new day. I love the stillness of early morning, before the house stirs and a rush of busyness sets in.
What’s special about morning?
He hears my voice.
“In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice. In the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation” (Ps. 51:3).
Here, the Psalmist extols the virtues of morning prayer. Jesus Himself prayed in the early morning, stealing away to a quiet place to talk to His Father. What an example He left for us to follow!
His mercies are new.
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning” (Lam. 3:22-23a).
Like manna in the desert, God’s mercies are a fresh gift each day. But His mercies aren’t just for morning! In Psalm 23:6, David says that His mercy follows me all of my life. What a comfort—waking up to mercy, then being followed by mercy every day.
Joy comes.
“Weeping endures for the night, but joy comes in the morning” (Ps. 30:5b).
Our tears matter so much to God that He keeps record of them and saves them all in a bottle (Ps. 56:8). Grief and sorrow will end, He promises. Morning will come, and with it, joy. And His joy is our strength.
This morning—and every morning—He hears our voice, offers new mercies, and gives joy.
The day awaits.
